Jiabing Egbert Chen陈嘉兵

Jiabing Egbert Chen陈嘉兵

CH 2 (1987)

Part of the "I Am Not Talking" series, Jiabing showcased his unique approach to merging tradition with personal expression. While pursuing his MFA in Chinese Ink Painting at the prestigious Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, he captured the essence of a bygone era, imbuing his works with both cultural heritage and introspective expressions.

Now presented in exhibition Ordinary Magic at Sotheby's Institute of Art, this painting traveled across time and place to present day New York, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the leisurely life of 1980s Chongqing, China, when Chinese contemporary art was just opening up to and letting in the outside world.

This painting offers a nostalgic yet intriguing lens into the daily lives of that era. Upon closer look, a curious question arises: is that a cat sitting in the middle? But some may argue it’s a dog. The whimsical ambiguity in Jiabing’s brushstrokes leaves much to interpretation, inviting viewers to ponder and get lost in time and place.
